Promoting Aluminum Recycling through the Triple Bin Challenge
Alcoa Australia Rolled Products and Alcoa Foundation have partnered with Clean Up Australia and local authorities in Victoria and New South Wales to actively engage students in recycling through the Triple Bin Challenge.
The challenge uses the same color-coded waste sorting system that is used throughout Alcoa's Australian operations. Materials collected are recycled, composted, or sent to landfill. The program was launched in New South Wales with Holroyd City Council in 2005 and was extended to Victoria in 2006.
Recycling aluminum delivers major energy savings, because the recycling process uses just 5% of the energy that is required to produce the same amount by starting from scratch with bauxite ore. With that dramatic energy savings comes a corresponding reduction in greenhouse emissions.
