AFL do Brasil has been certified by MWM – Internacional with the highest rating

November 24, 2005 -- (AFL Automotive News Release) AFL do Brasil, a company that is part of the Alcoa group and produces electric/electronic distribution systems for the automotive industry, has just gotten an A, the top grade in the quality evaluation conducted by MWM - Internacional Motores, the leading producer of diesel engines in the Mercosur region.

In addition to the recognition of AFL for the quality of the products it provides, the result of the audit carried out in late October qualifies the company to participate in bids for the development of new equipment. Nowadays, it supplies electronic fuel injection systems for 3.0 engines produced at the Rio Grande do Sul unit of MWM - Internacional, one of the most modern and up-dated plants in Latin America.

The engine company resulted from an agreement signed in April 2005 by International Engines South America, a US-based subsidiary of Navistar International Corporation, for the acquisition of a majority holding in MWM, a Brazil-based diesel engine manufacturer with a 52-year tradition in the marketplace. The company has a comprehensive range of engines that use state-of-the-art technology —2.5-9.3 liters and 50-375 horse power— and meet the strictest pollutant emission standards. Therefore, the company’s products are competitively supplied to any segment of the automotive, agricultural and industrial markets.

MWM-International’s major customers include companies like Ford, General Motors, Volkswagen, Volvo, Nissan, Troler, AGCO, Jacto, Land Rover, Stemac and Leon Heimer, as well as International Trucks, in the United States, and Land Rover, in England.

In addition to the superior quality of its products, Alcoa’s Itajubá unit, located in Minas Gerais state, has traditionally sought innovation in Health, Safety and Environment. In 1999 it was certified by BVQI under the ISO 14001 Environmental Management standard. In 2000, it was the company’s first unit worldwide to get the BS 8800 certification, which determines, in conjunction with OHSAS 18001, the requirements for an occupational safety and health management system, at that time attained by only a few companies in Brazil.
